Why are cheap sparkling wines so bad?

A reciprocal thanks to Dan Kirby for linking to Six Atmospheres last week - I enjoyed Dan’s take on some intense MW study tasting recently. It made me think of writing about the most common mistakes I’ve made tasting sparkling wine blind…..
It also made me want a grid.
Anyway, my twenty year old Peugeot 206 looks like it’s about to die a noble death soon. Talk of a new car makes thoughts turn to money, which is a subject I’m never quite sure how to approach with champagne and sparkling wine. This stuff is not cheap. But it’s not luxury watches, either; it’s not the haves-and-the-have-nots. It’s the haves-quite-frequently and the haves-only-when-you-don’t-need-a-new-cars.
